The 2022 Edinburgh Canal Festival, 18th June
After a 3 year break, Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust are organising the Edinburgh Canal Festival and Raft Race on Sat 18th June 2022. The new style Festival has seven main Festival areas to visit with a host of activities and organisations to discover — see the programme here.
Merchiston Community Council will again be participating, with a stall located in Harrison Park West, close to Ogilvie Terrace. Do pay us a visit!
The Bicentenary Celebration, 20th May
To celebrate 200 years of the Union Canal, a flotilla of decorated boats started from either end of the canal on Friday 20th May, with festivities and events attracting audiences along the way.
At Harrison Park we were entertained by the Union Canal 200 string quartet, playing instruments made by local luthier Steve Burdett, in part from a willow tree blown down in Harrison Park 20 years ago. The music, entitled Union Caledonian 200, was composed by 14-year-old Viktor Seifert and was very much enjoyed by the enthusiastic crowd.
Merchiston Community Council was able to grasp this opportunity to inform local residents about our role and our public meetings, to locate their homes on our boundaries map and to encourage them to consider joining us to help improve our neighbourhood and our communication with the City Council.
We had a busy afternoon with many interested visitors to our stall and hope to see increased participation at our next public meeting on June 21st.
