Leaf clearing in Merchiston, 2022

Merchiston is blessed with many beautiful trees. But the leaf litter they create can be a nuisance when it becomes slippery. Importantly it can contribute to flooding when the leaves block up the street drains. Sadly, the City of Edinburgh Council is no longer able to provide a comprehensive leaf clearing service. However, they will provide equipment to support Merchiston Community Council (MCC) with local leaf clearing and, importantly, remove the bags of leaves.

MCC hopes that residents and young people in the local neighbourhood will volunteer to help with clearing the leaf litter this autumn. The map below shows the area of focus, in red, as it has particularly heavy leaf fall.

You can support this initiative in the following ways:

  • Clear your own pavement area; and/or
  • work together with neighbours or family groups to clear more of the street; or
  • join others to work in streets with very heavy leaf falls.

City of Edinburgh Council will provide brushes, bags and gloves and will collect the filled bags.

If you would like more information please use our contact form to be kept informed of dates for clearing sessions. You can also look at our leaf clearing project page for more information about this initiative.

The proposed scheme takes account of the Grange Association’s highly successful leaf clearing initiative which has been operating in the Grange since 2018.
