We were extremely sad to learn of the sudden death of Councillor Val Walker on April 17th.
Councillor Walker was a Labour councillor representing the Fountainbridge and Craiglockhart ward and a very good friend to Merchiston Community Council (MCC), regularly attending our meetings and providing both a listening ear for the community council and our residents and highly informative updates about the state of play in the city and the City of Edinburgh Council (CEC). She was very diligent in following up issues raised and worked tirelessly for her residents. Val was warm and friendly, always positive and immensely supportive of local events and projects, coming along to talk to residents whenever possible.
As the city’s Culture and Communities Committee convener she maintained good relationships with all 47 Community Councils and supported the role and work of all community councils in City Council discussions and in the media. She also had responsiblity for CEC’s culture portfolio, with a particular interest in supporting public libraries. (See also the tribute from CEC.)
We shall miss her immensely.
